Weekly Round-up: The Key to Rondo and Catching Fire

Posted by panaura on 13th November 2009

The Key to RondoThere’s nothing better than a good series. And this week I reviewed installments in two different wonderful series’: The Key to Rondo by Emily Rodda and Catching Fire (book two of The Hunger Games) by Suzanne Collins.

The Key to Rondo has that perfect blend of magic and reality. It was exciting and fast-paced with a wide variety of magical and relatable characters. The story follows Leo Langlander and his impulsive cousin Mimi as they discover the secret about a family heirloom–a music box depicting magic land. They soon discover that there’s a whole lot more to the music box than just nice paintings and a pretty tune. It’s actually a gateway into the world of Rondo. After an evil blue queen steals Mimi’s dog, Leo and Mimi follow her into the music box and discover the life and strife inside of Rondo.Catching Fire

What can I say about Catching Fire? Amazing. Intense. Gripping. I didn’t think Suzanne Collins could outdo her first novel, The Hunger Games, but she certainly did. After surviving the Hunger Games–a brutal televised fight-to-the-death–Katniss is just trying to live a normal life. But the stunt she pulled in the arena that kept both her and her District 12 partner Peeta alive is coming back to haunt her. Her survival instinct may have unintentionally sparked a rebellion against the Capital, and President Snow is furious. He’ll do anything to prove that he is in control, even if it means threatening the lives of Katniss and all her family and friends.

Both of these books are fantastic reads. The Key to Rondo appeals to a younger audience (9-12 year olds) and Catching Fire will suit a teenage audience. Happy reading!

Weekly Roundup: The Hunger Games, The Gate of Days and The Circle of Gold

Posted by panaura on 23rd October 2009

The Gate of DaysThe Circle of GoldWow, what a wonderful week of books! The two sequels to The Book of Time by Guillaume Prevost are even better than the first. In The Gate of Days, Sam finally rescues his father from his six month lockdown in the dungeons of dracula’s castle. But his trip through time left him in a coma. In The Circle of Gold, Sam knows that in order to wake his dad up from his coma, his must once again travel back in time and save his mother from dying. But evil forces are at work. Sam’s crush, Alicia, is kidnapped and trapped somewhere in history. Before Sam can even think of altering the past, he needs to deal with more pressing issues…like getting Alicia back! The Hunger Games

Last but absolutely, 100% not least — The Hunger Games. Wow. That pretty much sums it up. Suzanne Collins is unbelievable. When I first learned the plot of this book — a sci-fi novel about mandatory competition forcing teenagers to fight to the death — I really wasn’t interested in reading it. But boy, am I glad I did. I was reassured by Stephenie Meyer‘s quote on the cover calling the book “amazing.” And she was definitely right. The Hunger Games was risky, edgy, barbaric, and so gripping I just couldn’t put it down. Could this series become the next Twilight? Quite possibly.

Aliens in the Attic

Posted by panaura on 10th August 2009

Aliens in the AtticI’m not going to lie, Aliens in the Attic looked a little silly in the previews. And it definitely is silly, but in a good way. It has more funny parts than I can list, particularly those when the cocky boyfriend, Ricky, is under the aliens’ control. This movie embodies the power of kids and how resourceful they can be. They can defeat of team of aliens without their parents even knowing about the invasion. That’s impressive stuff.

Jeanine Wins So You Think You Can Dance Season 5

Posted by panaura on 10th August 2009

Jeanine Mason is America's Favorite DancerWell, it was certainly a surprise to see Jeanine walk away with the title of America’s Favorite Dancer. She’s talented, no doubt. But she definitely played the underdog. Brandon looked like he had a clear path to the prize with his strong couples performances and even stronger solos. But perhaps it was time for another girl to win So You Think You Can Dance. After all, they’ve already had 3 male winners and, before now, only one female winner.

Staying Healthy While on the Zone

Posted by Kidzworld on 18th June 2009

One of the most important things today is finding a balance between being online, eating healthy and excersing. The KW Crew has come up with some great advice for kids on what to do to stay healthy while hanging out in the Zone.

It’s way more fun to chomp on chips while surfing for a free online contest or celebrities bios, but is that really the best thing to do? Probably not. It’s ok to munch on chips once in a while, but instead of snacking on chips, why not try something a little healthier, like low-fat string cheese or air-popped popcorn.

Worried that your friends aren’t eating healthy while in front of the computer? Why not try checking out some of the healthy snacks for a gift ideas guide.

It’s also important to keep excercising. Even though you have gym in school, it’s usually not enough to balance everything out. Ask the Coach for some tips on what excercises you can do while at the computer to stay fit. Checkout the recent book reviews to see if there might be information on staying fit.

It’s important to maintain a healthy balance between all the things we love to do and all the things that will keep us safe and healthy. If you’re not sure if you are on the right track, ask the Coach or an adult you trust. You could even ask other kids your age what they think on the kids message boards.

Kids safety, security and fun at Kidzworld

Posted by Kidzworld on 18th June 2009

Kidzworld is a website for kids, mostly Tweens, kids ages 9 – 14. It is a safe and secure, content-driven social community for Tweens, kids ages nine to fourteen.

When founder Allen W. Achilles established Kidzworld in July 1999, there were no safe kids websites, in fact there were very few websites for kids. At kidzworld the users can read the latest movie reviews, recent book reviews, new toy reviews, find school science fair projects, read series book reviews and find out about top kids books. They can meet other kids in the safe kids chat room, or in the kids message boards.

Every place in  Kidzworld that provides users with the ability to interact with one another is moderated. Not by a machine, but by a real live human being. Our “mods” as the kids know them are well trained, and in some cases have been with us for years.

Kidzworld leverages advanced technology to allow kids to express themselves through the creation of original content in a number of different ways. They interact with each other in the kids only chat room and through active engaging postings on our kids message boards:  “The boards“.  They are able to get advice for kids from other kids and talk about kids dating with other kids.

In the KW Zone, their user profile, is a safe and secure way for them to let other kids know who they are and what they are interested in. This area is always monitored – which is something no other kids website provides. In fact, everything kids do at Kidzworld  where they can interact with each other is moderated. Thus, there is no ability to share or disclose personally identifiable information. Kidzworld truly is the best website for kids.

At Kidzworld, we strive to enrich, empower and engage kids and Tweens worldwide by providing a responsible platform where they can play and create; explore and discover; gather and interact. This is also a kids games site where they can enter video game contests, play games, get game cheat hints, find the latest game reviews and read about trading cards. In the entertainment section they can read the latest celebrity bios and get news on celebs. They can also read the latest movie reviews and new DVD movie reviews

The safety and security of our kids at Kidzworld is at the core of our mandate as the best website for kids. As a parent, you can have confidence that Kidzworld is a great website for kids and Teens providing a safem secure empowering experience for your child or children.

Digital TV Conversion Changes Sports Forever

Posted by Kidzworld on 18th June 2009

Maybe mom and dad just got a new Digital TV. Maybe you’ve seen the messages across the bottom of the TV screen during the NBA Finals. Whatever it is, you’ve probably figured out that in the United States TV stations will only be broadcasting in digital signals from now on.  Whatever that means.

Just what is the deal with this conversion to digital TV? Well, it used to be analog signals were used by broadcasters such as CBS to beam sports programs to your TV. Then a few countries in Europe made the switch to digital and the U.S. decided to follow suit. It really is great if you like to watch sports on TV. I mean how good are the high def images you get of an NBA dunk? You can practically see the leather of the basketball shudder after Kobe throws down.

Digital broadcasters can now provide more digital channels, high definition service as well as all kinds of cool sports-related multimedia (much of it yet to be released) right to your house.
